Does your skin feel hot, sting, redden "for no reason"... and react to absolutely everything?
Welcome to the sensitive skin club.
A huge club, but one that gets a terrible reputation. With contradictory advice, drawn-out routines, and far too much guilt.
This guide is not for that.
It's there to help you understand what's really happening to your skin. So you can take back control — without panicking, without throwing everything away, without drowning in 10,000 contradictory recommendations.
Because your skin deserves better than approximations.
1. What exactly is "sensitive skin"?
The term is everywhere. But it hides several realities.
We talk about sensitive skin when your skin reacts easily to redness, tingling, burning, to things that don't bother most people : cold, wind, tap water, a new product, simple friction.
And these reactions keep coming back. Again and again.
The different faces of sensitivity
Sensitive skin can be:
Dry → It feels tight, flakes, and cracks
Reactive → It reddens, heats up, and stings at the slightest change
Atopic → Eczema, plaques, intense itching
With rosacea/couperose → Persistent redness, visible blood vessels, hot flashes
Key takeaways
➡️ Your skin is not capricious.
Its protective barrier is weakened. It no longer plays its role as a shield. And it's letting you know.
2. Why does your skin react to everything?
The story of the brick wall
Imagine your skin as a wall.
The bricks are your cells.
The cement between the bricks is made up of lipids (natural fats) which retain water inside and block aggressions from the outside.
When everything is going well:
- The water stays inside
- Irritants stay outside
- Your skin is supple, comfortable, silent
When the barrier is damaged (cold, harsh cleansers, repeated exfoliation, stress, medical treatments, hormones...):
- Water escapes → drought, tension
- Irritants penetrate → redness, burning, reactions
The real problem
It's not that your skin "can't tolerate anything".
That's because she's in a state of permanent alert.
Her defense system is failing. So she screams louder, more often.
3. Mistakes that make everything worse (even when you mean well)
When the skin becomes sensitive, we tend to... overreact.
And that's where the vicious cycle begins.
Mistake #1: Cleaning too much, too hard
Foaming cleansing gel, morning and evening.
Boiling water.
Daily makeup remover wipes.
Result: You remove the impurities... and the little bit of protection that remained.
Mistake #2: Accumulating aggressive assets
Exfoliating serum + acid + retinol + vitamin C + purifying mask + astringent toner.
Taken individually, they are not necessarily bad products.
But on fragile skin, this accumulation becomes a military-style training exercise.
Mistake #3: Changing creams every two weeks
As soon as redness appears, panic sets in. You throw everything away. You start again with something else.
The problem: Your skin never has time to stabilize. You no longer know what helps... or what irritates.
Mistake #4: Confusing reaction and "purge"
No, not everything is a normal purge.
If it burns, if it feels hot, if it itches to the point of waking you up at night, that's a clear sign:
Your skin is screaming "STOP. This is too much for me."
4. Become the investigator of your own skin
To better understand your sensitivity, you need to observe. Note. Decode.
The right questions to ask yourself
When ?
→ Right after showering? In the middle of winter? After removing makeup? After applying a specific product?
Or ?
→ Cheeks, nose contour, neck, hands, legs?
How long ?
→ A few minutes, several hours, several days?
What brings peace?
→ Cold water, oily texture (butter, oil, rich cream), nothing at all?
What you will discover
The more you observe, the more patterns appear:
"My redness always gets worse after long, hot showers."
"My rashes come back every time I reintroduce this product."
"Winter is disastrous for my legs, but summer is fine."
This is not obsessive-compulsive disorder.
It's about self-knowledge.
And that's the first step towards control.
5. The 3 pillars of a simple and effective sensitive skin routine
Good news: repairing a skin barrier does not require 12 products.
It requires going back to basics.
Pillar #1: Clean without destroying
Objective: To remove what needs to be removed (pollution, makeup, sunscreen) without damaging what protects (your natural lipids).
In concrete terms:
- A gentle cleanser, fragrance-free and free of harsh surfactants.
- Warm water (never boiling)
- No exfoliating brush, no rough glove, no vigorous rubbing.
The foolproof test:
If your skin feels tight, burns or itches after cleansing → the product is too strong. Period.
Pillar #2: Soothe and Rebuild
For sensitive skin, you want comforting textures. Rich in lipids. Packed with soothing ingredients.
What works:
- High-quality vegetable oils (sea buckthorn, jojoba, shea...)
- Lipid-replenishing agents that rebuild the "cement"
- Natural calming ingredients (plant extracts, antioxidant vitamins)
At Argola, we work with sea buckthorn oil precisely because of its natural richness in rare fatty acids and powerful antioxidants — perfect for dry, reactive and damaged skin.
The principle remains universal: nurture the barrier, don't destroy it.
Pillar #3: Daily Protection
Unprotected sensitive skin is like going out in the middle of January without a coat.
Daily aggressions:
Cold, wind, heating, sun, friction from clothing, pollution.
Protective measures:
- Richer cream in winter
- Be careful in the sun (especially if you have rosacea/couperose)
- Soft clothing, less irritating to sensitive areas

6. How to test a new product without disaster
Golden rule: one product at a time. Never in the heat of the moment.
The 3-step method
1. Localized test
Apply the product to a small area (behind the ear, crease of the elbow, or small part of the face) for a few days.
2. Observe carefully
Intense redness? Itching? Burning?
→ You stop immediately.
Anything to report?
→ You can integrate it gradually.
3. Introduce gently
Start by doing it every other day. Then, if all goes well, move on to every day.
The fatal mistake
Never change three products at the same time.
Otherwise, you'll never know who the culprit is... or the hero.
7. When should you consult a professional?
Let's be clear: even the best routine in the world is no substitute for medical advice.
You should consult a doctor if:
- Your itching is disrupting your sleep
- You have patches that ooze, bleed, or become infected.
- Your skin hurts so much that it impacts your daily life
- You suspect a severe allergy
- Your current treatments have not yielded any results for months.
Your skin doesn't deserve to be told "it's all in your head".
She deserves to be taken seriously.
8. What we stand for at Argola
At Argola Cosmétique, we have made a radical choice:
We are not "everyone's brand".
We have chosen to be on the side of sensitive, reactive, problem skin.
Those who have already heard:
"Just deal with it."
"You've tried everything anyway."
"That's just how you are, you're made the same way."
Our deep conviction
- Understanding your skin is a form of freedom
- A simple and consistent routine is better than an overflowing wardrobe.
- Sensitive skin deserves care that respects its fragility, not fleeting trends.
9. Where to begin (without panicking)
If you've read this far, it means you're tired of trying in vain.
Your first realistic step
Choose a maximum of 3 products for your basic routine:
- A gentle cleanser
- A nourishing/soothing treatment
- (Optional) A targeted treatment for eczema, redness, or intense dryness
Keep this routine for at least 3 to 4 weeks , unless there is an obvious reaction.
Observe what changes
- Less tension?
- Less itching?
- A more supple, more "habitable" skin?
These small changes are victories.
Don't downplay them.

We're not selling you a miracle in a jar.
We'll be there for you so that, day after day, you can finally say:
"My skin is still sensitive... but I know what to do."
And I feel we're moving in the right direction.
Because ultimately, that's exactly what changes everything:
Know.
To understand.
And to no longer be afraid of one's own skin.
