Sea buckthorn oil: the star of oils

Huile d’argousier : la star des huiles - Argola Cosmétique

Sea buckthorn oil, the plant

Sea buckthorn is a shrub 3 to 4 meters tall, belonging to the Elaeagnaceae family. It is a very hardy thorny plant. Native to Europe and the mountainous and temperate regions of Eurasia, it is found in China, the Himalayan regions, Russia, Mongolia, and as far north as the Scandinavian countries.
The oval-shaped fruits are yellow or orange when ripe (around September). These berries are edible and beneficial for the body, skin, and mucous membranes, and have been widely used by the Greeks, Tibetans, Chinese, and in traditional medicine.

Sea buckthorn oil, its composition

The cold-pressed seeds are used for the oil, while the fruits are used for the juice, which is rich in vitamin C.
The fruit of this shrub is the source of an extraordinary oil for its antioxidant properties, particularly due to its richness in polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The main active ingredients are: flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamins A, C, and E, sulfur, zinc, selenium, and copper. Sea buckthorn oil also contains essential nutrients such as essential fatty acids (Omega-3, Omega-6, Omega-7 , and Omega-9) and flavonoids. The fruits and seeds of the sea buckthorn tree yield a bright orange, oily substance used both internally and externally. The oil is found in the fruit pulp (5 to 9%) and also in the seeds (10 to 15%).

Its properties

  • Antioxidant, anti-aging :
Thanks to its exceptional level of vitamin E and carotenoids, sea buckthorn vegetable oil has antioxidant, free radical scavenging and anti-aging activity.
It will help you limit the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of aging.
  • Nourishing and moisturizing :
This oil is restorative, softening and protective.
Its high omega-3 and omega-6 content helps maintain skin elasticity and regenerate the hydrolipidic film.
It hydrates, nourishes and protects all skin types.
  • Rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega 3 and 6) and monounsaturated fatty acids (omega 7 and 9), it is a true treatment for the skin and mucous membranes.
Omega-7s : monounsaturated fatty acids found in adipose tissue, the liver, and cell membranes. They have the properties of polyunsaturated fatty acids like omega-3s but without their fragility.
  • Anti-inflammatory and healing :
It has a great power of cell regeneration, healing and protection with a high content of fatty acids.
In the case of irritated or injured skin, it has anti-inflammatory activity due to its richness in omega-3 and sterols.

In what cases and for whom?

  • Suitable for all skin types , but ideal for dry, damaged, and mature skin.
  • In winter, against chapped skin, cracks, and blisters.
  • Dry mucous membranes (ocular, vaginal, nasal or oral)
  • To combat wounds and burns, including sunburn, following radiotherapy
  • Eczema and acne...
  • To prepare for tanning
  • To stimulate the skin's repair mechanisms

How do I use it?

  • Can be used pure or mixed with vegetable oils or aloe vera gel for application to the skin.
  • Some people use it in cooking…
  • Caution: this oil is very colored, so be careful of red stains on skin or clothing.
It should be stored away from light in a cool, dry place and can be combined with sea buckthorn juice, which we will discuss later.

So take advantage of this treasure that nature offers us, useful to adults as well as children.

Our advice

  • For facial skin: the healthy glow duo
To relieve all situations of dryness, chapping and "cracks" of the facial skin.
